Kay grew up in Benson and attended St. Cloud State University and St. Cloud Technical College. She was the news director for KWLM and Q102 radio in Willmar before joining The Harrison Company as an appraiser. She later earned her real estate license and eventually her broker's license.
She is a past member of the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee and currently serves on the Benson Tourism Board, the Board of Directors of the Benson Golf Club and on the Swift County-Benson Hospital Foundation's Emerald Eve Committee, which oganizes an annual fundraising gala to benefit the hospital.
